Steve Zimmerman, MS, LAT, ATC, Head Athletic Trainer: After growing up in northern Seward County and graduating from Sublette High School, Steve attended Garden City Community College where he received an Associates of Science degree. He then attended Washburn University and graduated in December 1997 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education with concentrations in Athletic Training and Exercise Physiology. After graduating Steve worked a short stint at Coffeyville Community College. In the summer of 1998 he became a Certified Athletic Trainer and began his Master’s Program at Fort Hays State University while working for High Plains Sports Medicine as an Outreach Athletic Trainer. Steve then returned to his alma mater of GCCC in 1999 to work as the assistant athletic trainer, completing his Masters of Science degree in August of 2000. Steve returned to Hays in August of 2002 to work for Hays Medical Center as a clinical and outreach Athletic Trainer covering local and area schools. In the summer of 2005, Dr. Michael Baughman of Sandhill Orthopaedic and Sportsmedicine contacted Steve with the opportunity to return to southwest Kansas and cover LHS and other area schools as an outreach Athletic Trainer during the 2005-2006 school year. In May of 2006 the USD #480 Administration and School Board voted unanimously to hire Steve full time and he has been employed with the district since that time. In 2015 Steve began teaching under the CTE Health Science Pathway thru KSDE, teaching Care of Athletes (0.5 credit) and Health Science III (1.0 credit). Steve married his wife Amy in 2000. They have two children; daughter Braegan and son Cooper.
